Mission & Funding

Sunoco is proud of its long-standing commitment to corporate citizenship. The Sunoco Foundation supports the belief that Sunoco’s success is determined not only by investing in our business, but also by investing in the communities we serve. The Sunoco Foundation aligns giving and business strategy with focus on three key areas:

  • Fueling Minds: Educate and Develop Skills for the Workforce
  • Fueling the Planet: Promote Environmental Stewardship and Responsibility
  • Fueling Communities: Make them great places to live and work

About the Grant
The Foundation prefers to fund specific projects rather than operating budgets. Requests for deficit funding, individuals, benefit fundraisers, endowments, surveys, studies, religious groups, fraternal organizations, athletic groups, groups which discriminate by policy, schools, single diseases and non-tax exempt organizations are generally not considered. All contributions made are on a one-time basis unless expressly noted otherwise. The Foundation will not accept funding proposals to be used for lobbying or any other legislative purpose, to influence the outcome of any public election, to pursue terrorist activities or to support terrorist organizations or for any activity not described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We grant primarily to organizations in areas where Sunoco has a major presence. We generally do not support national or international organizations.

Applying for a Grant Online
The Sunoco Foundation application process is now online. There are three steps when applying for a grant from The Sunoco Foundation.

Step One: Eligibility Quiz
Successful completion of an eligibility quiz is the first step in the application process for The Sunoco Foundation. If you meet our basic funding guidelines, you will gain access to our online Letter of Inquiry.

Step Two: Letter of Inquiry (LOI)
All organizations must submit an online Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to be considered for funding.

Each LOI is reviewed to determine if it falls within the Foundation's guidelines. Those that do not are immediately declined. Those that are within the guidelines are then reviewed to determine the following:

the priority of the proposed activity within the Foundation's goals
the impact of the potential results of the activities
the availability of Foundation funds

Step Three: Full Application
If your Letter of Inquiry reflects the Foundation's priorities, we will ask you to complete a full application. Since we request more proposals than we can fund, please do not interpret such a request as an indication of likely support.

In some instances, we may contact you for additional information prior to asking you to fill out an online application.
